DEI STATEMENT

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Policy:

Richmond Performing Arts Alliance (RPAA) strives to represent our diverse community of artists, families, and community members. We center Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion as core values that play a role in important decision-making. Our team is fully behind this effort, from our Board leadership to our staff, and our solidarity is demonstrated in our Community Agreements below.

Core tenets of this initiative:

  • RPAA serves individuals from all racial and ethnic backgrounds, and we actively work to make our programs representative of this diversity. We aim to uplift those who have been historically underrepresented in the arts, those who have lacked access because of structural barriers or institutional racism – in particular, we aim to support Black and Brown artists.
  • We invite and include those in the LGBTQ+ community. We address individuals how they want to be addressed.
  • We aim to be accessible and accommodating for individuals with disabilities. We invite feedback and insights for making our spaces more accessible.
  • RPAA will make a concerted effort to further the development of these initiatives, and they will not fall to the wayside when leadership changes. DEI is not a peripheral project, but a core part of our mission.
  • Anyone who engages with our programming and spaces agrees to uphold the values of RPAA. We have a zero-tolerance policy against racism, sexism, ageism, ableism, classism, body shaming, homophobia, transphobia, antisemitism, anti-Muslim sentiment, religious intolerance, or any discrimination on all grounds. This includes bullying or harassment of any kind.
  • Violations of our Community Agreements will be taken seriously and could result in immediate dismissal from all RPAA content, events, or activities. We agree to hold individuals accountable for their actions on a case-by-case basis, guaranteeing equitable treatment and an inclusive environment.

DEI Statement

RPAA recognizes that many existing systems of power grant privilege and access unequally. However, we believe that equity is crucial to the work we do and the community we build. Through our intentions and actions, RPAA hopes to create a system that is inherently inclusive. In order for this to happen, we have created an actionable plan that will be implemented and maintained.

Community Agreements

Anyone who engages with our programming and spaces agrees to uphold the values of RPAA. Failure to comply with our Community Agreements will be taken seriously and may result in immediate dismissal from all RPAA content, events, or activities. We agree to hold individuals accountable for their actions on a case-by-case basis, guaranteeing equitable treatment and an inclusive environment.

  • We impose a zero-tolerance policy against racism, sexism, ageism, ableism, classism, body shaming, homophobia, transphobia, antisemitism, anti-Muslim sentiment, religious intolerance, and any discrimination without exception. This includes bullying or harassment of any kind.
  • We include and welcome individuals of all racial and ethnic backgrounds.
  • We honor the names, pronunciation, and pronouns of anyone with whom we interact.
  • We provide accommodations and inclusion for all those with disabilities.
  • We celebrate differences and diverse cultures. We want all artists to know they are welcome!
  • If you feel you have been disrespected or excluded, or if you feel uncomfortable at any time, please contact an RPAA team member immediately to have the situation resolved.
  • If you need to address an incident after the fact, please fill out this incident form. We strongly encourage all feedback about your concerns.
