The Genworth Lights Up! Youth Series is bringing another round of free visual and performing arts workshops and live performances to young artists ages 3–18. Kids can jump into hands-on creative experiences led by local artists and arts organizations. Whether they’re trying something new or building on skills they already love, there’s a way for every young artist to play.

Workshops

Join us for a fun and imaginative movement workshop where children will explore the magic of the jungle through dance and music. In a warm and playful setting, little ones will move, create, and express themselves freely.

Inspired by a sweet story about finding your own rhythm, we will swing like monkeys, stomp like elephants, tiptoe like giraffes, and twist like snakes. Along the way, children will discover their own unique dance moves while building confidence and coordination. Get ready to move, imagine, and have lots of fun — because everyone can dance!

This workshop is taught by Zaira Pulido.

A lot of different animals give us fibers that we can use to make cloth!  In this workshop, we’re going to talk about how fibers are made into yarn and how yarn is made into cloth, and we’ll also play with different animal fibers that we can use. Participants will shape and glue some of those fibers to make a unique picture!

This workshop is taught by Megan Morris.

In this high-energy 45-minute masterclass, young performers will learn that acting isn’t just about talking. It’s about moving! We’ll start with a “bravery warmup” to shake off the nerves and take up space, then dive into “action-first” scene work. Then we will work on grounding our feet and choosing our movements carefully. Then we will finish by learning Miss Carter’s memorization hacks. Students will leave feeling grounded, confident, and rarin’ to go!

This workshop is taught by Kamaron Carter with Henrico Parks & Recreation.

In this hands-on creative workshop, participants will explore texture, color blending, and sculptural design by creating their own 3D dragon eye using air-dry clay and vibrant markers.

Students learn how to tint clay through hands-on color mixing, experiment with shaping and layering techniques, and design unique textures that bring their dragon eye to life. The project encourages creative risk-taking, problem-solving, and artistic ownership – no two eyes are ever the same!

This workshop is taught by Andrea Garcia-Gamez with Thrive Creative Arts.

Discover the excitement of flamenco through powerful footwork, expressive arms, and rhythmic movement. This fun, interactive workshop is open to all ages and experience levels.

This workshop is taught by the Latin Ballet of Virginia.

Come explore how stage lighting can change what we see. What happens when the color of a light changes? This interactive workshop will help develop problem solving skills and enhance the understanding of color theory. This class is good for all levels of experience.

This workshop is taught by Gretta Daughtrey.
